A majority of House Democrats now favor impeaching President Donald Trump, adding to the growing pressure on Speaker Nancy Pelosi to start the proceedings.

In addition to this development, half of House committee chairmen who are conducting investigations into Trump’s businesses and administration now support impeachment proceedings.

Representative Eliot Engel, chair of the House Foreign Affairs Committee, has become the third chairman this week to back it.

“The president’s repeated abuses have brought American democracy to a perilous crossroads,’ he said in a statement. ‘Following the guidance of the Constitution — which I have sworn to uphold — is the only way to achieve justice.”

Pelosi, who has resisted impeachment proceedings so far, said she still needs more convincing, saying, “I’m not trying to run out the clock. We will proceed when we have what we need to proceed, not on day sooner.”

Rep. Salud Carbajal (D-CA) flipped on Friday to become the 188th congressman to support impeachment, meaning a majority of the 235 House Democrats want to put the president on trial.
