Seyi Omooba, an up-and-coming actress, was overjoyed at being chosen for a lead role in the Color Purple. However, just a day later she was sacked for being a ‘homophobe’ after a 5-year old Facebook post was dredged up in which she expresses her Christian beliefs by quoting the Bible.
The 25-year old is now suing after six months saying her career is in ruins because of religious discrimination. The actress told The Mail that she was no longer invited to auditions and that, “I’m heartbroken. If I’m unable to get back to the stage, then I feel there is no point. It’s the only thing I have ever wanted since I was a young girl.”
The London-born actress trained at the prestigious Mountview Academy of Theatre Arts and quickly found parts in the National Theatre and West End.
In 2017, she became the show-stopper at the Cadogan Hall in London in a gala concert production of The Color Purple (musical). One critic even described her gospel vocals as “jaw droppingly good”.
Her Facebook post discussing homosexuality said, “It is clearly evident in 1 Corinthians 6:9-11 what the Bible says on this matter. I do not believe you can be born gay and I do not believe homosexuality is right…”
Aaron Lee Lambert called up Omooba on this post by tweeting, “Do you still stand by this post? Or are you happy to remain a hypocrite? Seeing as you’ve now been announced to be playing an LGBTQ character, I think you owe your LGBTQ peers an explanation. Immediately.”
Omooba is adamant that she is not homophobe and is being supported by the Christian Legal Centre.
