Muslim Radical Part of Ad Campaign on New York Subways

A Muslim radical who was named as a possible unindicted co-conspirator in the 1993 World Trade Center bombing is promoting a new Islamic advertising campaign on New York City subways, The New York Post has reported. The individual, Siraj Wahhaj, appears in a video to help advertise the campaign, called The Subway Project, which aims to place pro-Islam posters in 1,000 subway cars.

The Post notes that Wahhaj, an imam out of Brooklyn, once said that “In time, this so-called democracy will crumble, and there will be nothing, and the only thing that will remain will be Islam.”

The campaign is led by the Islamic Circle of North America, and tells readers to visit WhyIslam.org. The organization denies supporting terrorism or extremism. WhyIslam.org, which is a subsidiary of I.C.N.A., has a section on its web site devoted to explaining verses of the Koran, the Islamic holy book, that appear violent and extremist in nature.

The site also has an article entitled “Worldwide Muslim Condemnation of Terrorism” that condemns the attacks of 9/11 and calls for bringing the perpetrators to justice. The article also says U.S. military reaction for the attacks will not be effective, as the “root causes” of terrorism must be addressed in order to stop further attacks. Despite I.C.N.A.’s denials, some experts say I.C.N.A. promotes radical Islam.

“[ICNA] has hosted many conferences of which we have tapes and documents from that called for violence, that have supported suicide bombings, that have disrespected the United States,” said counter-terrorism expert Steven Emerson on Fox News on July 21, 2008. Emerson is also the head of The Investigative Project on Terrorism.

He says I.C.N.A. and various other Muslims organizations are offshoots of Muslim Brotherhood, a radical Islamic organization founded in Egypt in the 1920s.

“It [the subway advertising campaign] is designed to recruit, expand their ranks, and spread their Islamist interpretation of Islam, which is quite radical,” he said.
