CAIR Suffers From Declining Muslim Support
WorldNetDaily.com reports that officials from the Council on American-Islamic Relations are complaining about a lack of support from the Muslim community since being designated as an "unindicted co-conspirator" in a terrorism financing trial. CAIR is contesting the label.
"Contributions to CAIR have gone down, so we can hire fewer people, can run fewer activities…People are afraid to come to events…Mosques are also hesitant to open the doors to us…," Moufa Nahhas, the president of CAIR's Dallas-Fort Worth chapter was quoted as saying in an American Civil Liberties Union report. The ACLU report says that CAIR was "smeared" by the federal government and should have the label removed.
The Washington Times reported on June 12, 2007 that the organization's membership had fallen 90 percent since the attacks of September 11, 2001. The report also cited IRS forms that showed the group's had received $732,765 in 2000, but only received $58,750 in 2006.
CAIR denies all accusations that they are connected to terrorism or extremism. Their website states they have "consistently and persistently condemned terrorism and the killing of innocent civilians."
