Security Vulnerabilities Found at Government Buildings
Agents belonging to the Government Accountability Office were able to penetrate the security of ten federal buildings carrying bomb-making material, ABC News reports. The buildings were not identified for security reasons, but are assumed to be high-profile.
"…8 were government-owned, 2 were leased, and included offices of a U.S. Senator and U.S. Representative, as well as agencies such as the Departments of Homeland Security, State, and Justice," the preliminary GAO report says according to ABC News.
The report also includes a video showing a GAO agent sneaking bomb components past security at one building. He is then reported to have assembled the bomb in the bathroom and covertly transported it through the building. The agents also discovered one guard sleeping on duty, and one so distracted that he missed the passing of a baby in a carriage through an X-Ray machine.
The GAO concluded that large numbers of security personnel had been inadequately trained.
"After inspecting the records of 663 randomly selected guards, the GAO found that nearly two-thirds 'had at least one expired firearm qualification, background investigation, domestic violence declaration, or CPR/First Aid training certification,'" the ABC News report said.
In November 2007, the GAO reported that its agents had snuck bomb-making material passed airport security at 19 airports.
