The Department of Homeland Security (DHS) is now going to consider white supremacist and Antifa violence as domestic threats facing the country.
Kevin McAleenan, acting Homeland Security Secretary, introduced ‘Strategic Framework for Countering Terrorism and Targeted Violence’, which reflects on how the department is adapting to prevent home-grown terrorism besides threat from organizations like ISIS.
The framework makes specific target of violent white supremacist extremism, calling it as “one of the most potent forces driving domestic terrorism. White supremacist violent extremists’ outlook can generally be characterized by hatred for immigrants and ethnic minorities, often combining these prejudices with virulent anti-Semitism or anti-Muslim views.”
The framework compares white supremacist extremists’ actions to works of ISIS in terms of how the two groups could connect online with other like-minded individuals.
“Domestic terrorists…have caused more deaths in the United States in recent years than have terrorists connected to FTOs (foreign terrorist organizations),” the framework states.
It also cites encrypted sites such as Gab, 8chan and EndChan to serve as platforms where extremists can share manifestos, conspiracy theories, theory of “ethnic replacement” and celebration of hate.
The agency framework takes aim at anti-authority and anti-government violent extremism, citing incidents like the attempted bombing of an ICE facility by an alleged antifa supporter and other similar acts performed by people claiming to be “sovereign citizens.”
