Muslim Speaker at Inaugural Service Head of Group Tied to Hamas

One of the speakers at President Obama’s inaugural prayer service is part of a group linked to a terrorist front organization, the International Herald Tribune reported. The speaker, Ingrid Mattson, is the president of the Islamic Society of North America which was labeled by the federal government as an “unindicted co-conspirator” in a terrorism financing trial.

The spokesperson for President Obama’s inaugural committee defended choosing Mattson to speak at the service.

She has a stellar reputation in the faith community,” the spokesperson was quoted as saying in the report.

Although the Islamic Society of North America has not been charged with any crime, “prosecutors wrote in July that they had ‘a wide array of testimonial and documentary evidence expressly linking’ the group to Hamas and other radical groups, the International Herald Tribune report said. The prosecutors were involved the case of the Holy Land Foundation, which was shut down by the government and found guilty of acting as a front for Hamas.

Critics of the organization have also alleged that it is tied to the Muslim Brotherhood, an international radical Islamic organization. The group was co-founded by Sami al-Arian, who was later convicted of assisting the Palestinian Islamic Jihad terrorist group and has admitted to being a member of Muslim Brotherhood. An internal Muslim Brotherhood document also identified the organization as one of its “organizations and friends.”

The Islamic Society of North America denies that it has ever had a relationship with Muslim Brotherhood and says it has condemned terrorism.
