NJ Resident Admits to Assisting Hezbollah

The Star Ledger has reported that Salah Elahawal, who lives in Matawan, NJ, has plead guilty to being paid $112,000 by the Hezbollah terrorist group to provide programming from its television station to satellite subscribers. Javed Iqbal of Staten Island, who worked with Elahawal, plead guilty to the same charge in late December.

This is not the only terrorism-related incident in New Jersey in recent years.

Six Muslim males sympathetic to Al-Qaeda were found guilty on December 22, 2008 of plotting to attack Fort Dix, a military base located in New Jersey. Prior to that, a prominent imam in the state, Mohammed Qatatani, faced deportation after the Israeli army claimed that he admitted to being a member of Hamas when he was detained in Israel in 1993.

The Department of Homeland Security says that Qatanani did not disclose his arrest in Israel when he applied for a green card. He argues that he was never formally charged and was not arrested, only detained. Qatanani is also relying upon the testimonies of members of his community, including Christian and Jewish religious leaders, to defend himself against the charge.

A federal judge ruled against the deportation of Qatanani, deciding to give him permanent residency. The Department of Homeland Security is appealing the decision.
