Some Muslim Groups Defend Convicted Terrorists That Targeted Fort Dix

Some American-Muslim organizations are vocally opposing a court decision finding five terrorists who planned to attack Fort Dix as guilty, Adnkronos is reporting. They argue that the five individuals are innocent.

"I don't think they actually mean to do anything. "I think they were acting stupid, like they thought the whole thing was a joke," the report quoted Mohamad Younes, the president of the American Muslim Union as saying.

“Many people in the Muslim community will see this as a case of entrapment,” Jim Sues, the executive director of the Council on American-Islamic Relations’ branch in New Jersey, was quoted as saying.

The five individuals were arrested in May after two FBI informant tipped off the agency about their plans. One informant was a convicted felon and was involved in bank fraud, and the second has admitted to shooting someone when he lived in Albania and entering the U.S. illegally, according to The Star Ledger.

The attorneys for the defendants said that the informant, who was later paid by the FBI for his information, provoked their clients into making the remarks. After their arrest, the FBI located extremist propaganda, weapons and maps, which were then used to make the case against them.

Michael Hammer, a federal prosecutor involved in the trial, told the jury that the evidence against the defendants was “overwhelming.”

The Council on American-Islamic Relations is currently contesting the federal government’s labeling of them as an “unindicted co-conspirator” in a terrorism financing trial of the Holy Land Foundation, a charity which was found guilty of secretly financing the Hamas terrorist group. The organization denies any allegations of wrongdoing and says it opposes terrorism and extremism.
