Muslim Leader in UK Issues Fatwa Against Terrorism

tahir-ul-qadriDr. Tahir ul-Qadri, a Muslim preacher in the United Kingdom originally from Pakistan, has written a fatwa, or Islamic ruling, banning suicide bombings and acts of violence against non-Muslim innocents as being against Islam, The Independent reports. Ul-Qadri is a Sufi Muslim, which is known as being a more moderate sect of the religion. Others are more skeptical of ul-Qadri's credentials as a moderate.

The report describes ul-Qadri as having achieved "one of the highest positions in Islamic jurisprudence" and says that the British branch of his organization, Minhaj-ul Quran, has 25,000 members.

The fatwa specifically says that acts of murder, terrorism and rioting in response to foreign aggression is anti-Islamic, a rebuttal to groups in places like Afghanistan, Iraq, Lebanon and Gaza that justify their actions by saying they are against non-Muslim invaders. He even says that suicide bombers will go to hell.

Another British moderate Muslim organization called The Quilliam Foundation praised ul-Qadri's fatwa.

"Terrorist groups such as al-Qaeda continue to justify their mass killings with self-serving readings of religious scripture. Fatwas that demolish and expose such theological innovations will consign Islamist terrorism to the dustbin of history," a spokesperson told The Independent.

The fatwa is over 600 pages long and is described by The Jerusalem Post as the "most comprehensive theological refutation of Islamist terrorism."

Robert Spencer of JihadWatch.org does not believe the fatwa goes far enough, saying it needs to forbid jihad altogether and address verses in the Islamic holy texts justifying it.

"Thus, even despite the ruling on suicide attacks, this fatwa is not a game-changer, so to speak. There is more than one way to wage a jihad," he wrote on his website.

On Examiner.com, Qasim Rashid wrote that ul-Qadri's is a "walking contradiction" and reported that he was a main force behind Pakistan's anti-blasphemy law that has been used to punish critics of Islam and Muslim minorities.
