Terror Plots in UK Foiled

The Daily Mail reported March 4 that four people had been arrested, including two employees of British Airways, for planning to fund terrorism. This followed a February 24 report from The Telegraph about three Muslim gang members who videotaped their preparations to carry out an attack before being arrested.

The Times Online reports that one of the airport employees may have had contact with Al-Qaeda elements in Yemen and they believe has he been involved in terrorist activity for four years. The suspect, Rajib Karim, booked flights for customers by phone.

The gang members called themselves the "Blackburn Resistance" and filmed a videotape showing them engaging in amateur training for the attack, such as crawling on their stomachs while wearing military fatigue. They are also seen holding rifles and machetes. Images of Osama Bin Laden were also shown.

"'Some aspects of the material may at first blush seem almost comical in its amateurishness, but when you recall their purpose it is less funny," Edward Brown, the prosecutor, said.

One of the gang members, Abbas Iqbal, was arrested in August 2008 at Manchester Airport.   He and his brother were found to possess weapons and had been researching how to wage guerilla warfare. They are believed to have been planning to fight non-Muslim forces in Iraq or Afghanistan.

In related news, Israel Today reports that London has become the base for the majority of Hamas' non-violent activity according to Israel's Intelligence and Terrorism Information Center, a non-governmental organization.
