A distraught eye-witnesses has described how gunmen yelled 'Allahu Akbar' before gunning down women and children near a hotel in Ivory Coast.
Six attackers armed with Kalashnikovs opened fire outside the Hotel Etoile du Sud in Grand-Bassam on the south coast of the country.
A police source said at least 16 people - including a five-year-old child - have been killed.
The hotel is popular with Western tourists and four Europeans are believed to be among the dead.
The eyewitness said: "There were three (shooters). He isn’t a Muslim. I saw a kid he had his head like this watching when they shot a woman."
The eye-witness described the gunmen shooting women and children
"They screamed Allahu Akbar before they shot I swear to you they are not Muslims.... they shot over there, it happened over there, they shot innocent people."
The army has been called in to evacuate the beach and pictures from the scene show a number of casualties strewn across the sand.
Weapons including grenades were also discovered at the scene and the gunmen are believed to remain at large.
Security services from the National police and French forces are now on site, it was claimed.
The beach was evacuated amid reports another of a hostage situation at another location.
A government statement confirmed a five-year-old child is among the confirmed victims.
The statement said: "Our security services are on site to deal with the situation and protect the population. We ask people not to panic and to remain calm."
Grand-Bassam is located about 25 miles east of the country's main city, Abidjan.
