Bin Laden Issues New Tape Attacking Obama
CNN.com reports that a new audiotape of Osama Bin Laden has emerged, where he ridicules President Obama and warns of the influence of the "Israel Lobby" over the U.S. government.
The tape is unique in that Bin Laden tries to explain why his Al-Qaeda terrorist group launched the attacks of September 11, 2001, and tries to explain it as a reaction to U.S. foreign policy. The Bush Administration consistently argued that the West was being targeted because its democratic values were incompatible with the radical Islamic ideology of Bin Laden and other terrorists.
"From the beginning, we have stated many times ... that the cause of our disagreement with you is your support of your allies, the Israelis, who are occupying our land in Palestine. Your stance along with some other grievances are what led us to carry out the events of 9/11," Bin Laden said on the tape.
Bin Laden also predicted that the influence of "neoconservatives" and the "Israel lobby" would prevent President Obama from withdrawing U.S. forces from Iraq.
Agence France Presse reports that some terrorism experts are describing the audiotape as showing Bin Laden as "weak" due to the pressure he's feeling from international counter-terrorism efforts.
Bin Laden's attempts to explain his actions may also have been aimed at winning Muslim support. A Pew Research poll released last week found that support for Bin Laden and the suicide bombing of civilians has significantly fallen since 2002, although there was some increase in support over the past year.
