Cheryl Maples, an attorney who argued in favor of homosexual marriage in both Arkansas and at the US Supreme Court, has died from complications of congestive heart failure. She was 69 years old.
Maples was a well-known homosexual rights activist who lived in Arkansas.
Though some liberals praised the recent death of conservative billionaire and philanthropist David Koch, 79, there doesn’t seem to be similar distasteful praises for the death of Maples by pro-family activists.
After David Koch’s death last week, New York Magazine described him as “monstrous.” Bill Maher said on his HBO “Real Time” show that he was “glad” Koch was dead and hoped “the end was painful.” Actor Ron Perlman (Sons of Anarchy fame) wrote on his Twitter account, “Wishing the Koch brothers a speedy reunion,” in reference to David Koch’s older brother, Charles, who is still alive.
Maples represented same-sex couples who challenged Arkansas’ constitutional amendment defining marriage as a union between a man and a woman. In 2014, a Pulaski County judge struck down the amendment. Maples also successfully challenged the state’s birth certificate law, which defined parents by gender.
“The voters can’t just vote a change to an inalienable right,” Maples told The Associated Press.
