Bronx ISIS supporter who hoped to behead people with chainsaws gets 22 years

Sajmir Alimehmeti

A 26-year-old man who stockpiled various hand weapons and dubbed himself “The Dentist” was sentenced to 22 years behind bars Friday. His alleged plan: decapitate people for ISIS.

“You are a ticking time bomb,” Manhattan federal Judge Paul Engelmayer told Sajmir Alimehmeti before sentencing him on charges of providing material support to ISIS and passport fraud.

The defendant began assembling his arsenal of handheld weapons in his Bronx apartment after he was twice detained at UK airports on his way to Syria in 2014, the New York Post reported.

Engelmayer listed Alimehmeti’s chilling array of weaponry, including a military survival knife, three tactical knives, two credit-card-sized folding knives, a wire pocket saw, a 24-inch pocket chainsaw, a tactical backpack, tactical ski mask and handcuffs.

The judge said it was difficult to imagine a “benign reason” for Alimehmeti to “stockpile weapons that would be used to restrain, gut, or decapitate a human body.”

Prosecutor Emil Bove described how Alimehemti enthusiastically described to undercover agents his plans to perform beheadings on ISIS’s behalf. He described the chainsaw as having “two hooks, hand grips on each side.

“This is a weapon the defendant intended to use to perpetrate decapitation,” the prosecutor said.

It isn’t known how Alimehmeti came to refer to himself as “The Dentist,” but he used code to describe places he would travel to so that he could “brush his teeth,” according to court papers. He also told undercover agents he viewed beheading videos to stay motivated during exercise, prosecutors said.

Defense attorney Susan Kellman said her client struggled to fit in after moving to the US at age 6 from Albania and was radicalized as a teenager during a stint for robbery in the Fishkill Correctional Facility by Mohamed Mamdouh, one of the masterminds behind a foiled plot to blow up a Manhattan synagogue in 2011.

Alimehmeti declined to speak Friday but walked out of the courtroom with a big smile plastered across his face.
