Church burns down but cross remains standing

The world seems a place of gathering darkness for followers of Christ, as the leadership of the strongest nation on Earth sinks deeper into sin, lies, corruption and tyranny.

Which adds to the significance of any sign or omen.

When fire swept through a small church in a small town on June 17 – Balsora Baptist Church in Bridgeport, Texas – it was severe enough to bring down part of the roof and walls, leaving a jumble of charred rafters, pews and shingles and several injured firefighters.

But in the middle of the smoking wreckage something was still intact: the cross that had stood in the middle of the sanctuary. It was an amazing sight, reported

In a Facebook post, the Wise County volunteer fire company said: “A devastating loss to our community, but a sight to behold. The fire took the structure, but not the cross. A symbol that the building was just that, a building. The Church is the congregation, and where 2 or more gather, there he shall be also.”

The fire company suggested that the fire was caused by extreme heat in that part of Texas, where temperatures were over 100 last week.

The firefighters who were injured were treated at local hospitals and all are expected to recover.

The church held a service on June 19, and on Facebook, the congregation celebrated the enduring cross.

“The Cross that held our prayer request in the sanctuary, was still standing! We praise God that He still answers prayers. We look forward to all He’s going to do at Balsora Baptist!!!” church leaders wrote.
