On Friday, Rep. Ilhan Omar (D-MN) filed for legal divorce from her second husband of just one year, Ahmed Abdisalan Hirsi, amid allegations that she is involved in an extramarital affair with Tim Mynett, a Washington, DC based national political strategist hired by her congressional campaign.
As per court records filed in the state of Minnesota, Omar stated, “There has been an irretrievable breakdown of the marriage relationship,” and is seeking “joint legal and physical custody” of their three minor children.
Hirsi and the freshman congresswoman were married in 2002, but got legally separated in 2008, before marrying again in 2018.
Omar, who is a Somali refugee to the Minneapolis area, has earlier been embroiled in an immigration fraud for marrying British citizen Ahmed Nur Said Elmi, who is her brother for him to acquire a United States citizenship.
She legally married Elmi in 2009 and religiously divorced him in 2011. However, it was only in 2017 that they acquired a legal divorce – a month later Hirsi and Omar were married.
Through the entirety of Omar’s marriage to Elmi, she and Hirsi were allegedly sharing the same space. In June, Minnesota campaign finance officials revealed that Hirsi and Omar jointly filed taxes in 2014 and 2015.
