In a victory for criminals and yet another setback for law and order, a pair of privileged, woke, non-white lawyers who torched a police van in New York City in 2020 during a Black Lives Matter riot are now looking at much-reduced sentences.
Colinford Mattis, 35, who attended the exclusive St. Andrew’s prep school in Delaware, and Urooj Rahman, 33, now face just two years in jail for attacking the van – which was unoccupied at the time – with a Molotov cocktail.
The socially conscious but apparently law-unconscious pair of lawyers had originally faced up to life behind bars after torching the van in Brooklyn in May 2020, days after George Floyd died in the custody of Minneapolis police.
Patrick J. Lynch, president of the New York City Police Benevolent Association, condemned the decision to dramatically shorten the sentences of the two firebug attorneys. A plea deal reduced their terrorism charges to conspiracy to commit arson, according to a letter filed on May 13. Prosecutors have said they’ll ask for the pair to be given between 18 and 24 months behind bars, although the sentencing judge has the power to impose a sentence of up to five years.
At a hearing at Brooklyn Federal Court in October 2021 the two were still facing a decade behind bars, but now they appear to be looking at a much lighter sentence.
“The judge must reject this request,” Lynch said on FOX News. “There is absolutely no justification for lowballing the sentence for an anti-police terrorist attack.”
“It’s bad enough that these dangerous criminals have been allowed to sit at home for the past two years,” he added.
