The Jewish news platform “Fearless” reported this week that newly-elected Muslim congresswoman Ilhan Omar (D, Minnesota) now expresses an anti-Israel trade policy she previously distanced herself from during her campaign.
Fearless noted that Omar, through her office’s responses Sunday to a website “MuslimGirl,” is fully supportive of efforts to boycott, divest and place trade sanctions against Israel, “now that the election is over.”
The movement to isolate Israel from the U.S. and the west this way is called BDS, which the Fearless report noted.
“This seemed like a bait-and-switch to many Jewish Minnesotans,” the Fearless report read. “When she was asked at an August primary debate held in a synagogue to specify ‘exactly where you stand’ on BDS, Omar said that BDS was ‘not helpful in getting that two-state solution.’“
The report noted that Omar side-stepped on her views directly, thus avoiding the fact that she supports the isolation policy against Israel.
But now, Representative omar has nothing to lose
Commenting on this revelation was Jihad Watch editor and founder Robert Spencer, who said first of all, “The BDS movement is frankly neo-Nazi in its goals, as the Nazis staged nationwide boycotts of Jewish-owned businesses early in the Third Reich.”
Spencer assesses that this link would be a main reason for Omar to avoid the issue before Election Day.
“So ilhan Omar (the candidate) had every reason to distance herself from this movement before the election,” Spencer said. “But now, Representative Omar has nothing to lose.”
Forward asked Rabbi Avi Olitzky of Beth El Synagogue, that hosted the campaign debate in which Omar made her pre-election comments, what his thoughts are now.
“She’s either misrepresenting or misunderstanding,” Olitzky is quoted as saying. “I hope to be able to have a dialogue with her that clarifies which of those is the nature of her stance.”
Fearless also reported that they tried to get a response on the issue from Omar’s office, but received none.
“What a surprise,” Spencer noted.
