“If you’re going to speak the truth, have one foot in the stirrup,” as the saying goes.
An NBC Sports hockey analyst didn’t know this, though, and has been booted off the air for suggesting that maybe females distract males. Shocking.
MailOnline reports that the network removed National Hockey League analyst Mike Milbury, 68, for making an “insulting” comment about women during a live broadcast of a match between the New York Islanders and Washington Capitals. When fellow commentator Brian Bouche mentioned the NHL’s “quarantine bubble”, Milbury added: “There’s not even any woman here to disrupt your concentration.”
The comment caused a storm on Twitter, and despite the fact that Twitter lets anyone post anything anonymously, Milbury was quickly thrown under the bus by the NHL.
“The National Hockey League condemns the insensitive and insulting comment that Mike Milbury made during last night’s broadcast and we have communicated our feelings to NBC,” the organization said in a statement released Aug. 21.
Milbury apologized in a statement, but was nonetheless booted from covering Friday games.
Many social media users described Milbury’s remarks as “offensive” and “outdated.” Others characterized it as a tempest in a teacup.
“It’s Friday, August 21, 2020 and we must find something. -ANYTHING! – to get offended about today. It would be a waste of a day if we couldn’t find something trivial to get bent out of shape about,” one person mocked.
