Perhaps it’s just a desperate attempt to whip up even more media attention; perhaps it’s a genuine artistic gamble from the people who brought you Jar Jar Binks.
Director J.J. Abrams first hinted at an LGBT presence in the new Star Wars film earlier this month, and sure enough there’s a same-sex kiss in there now, Mailonline reveals.
Interestingly, it is not between major characters and NOT between men.
Fans got their first glimpse of the same-sex relationship at Monday night’s premiere of Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker.
In a breakthrough for the franchise’s 40-year, hype- and merchandising-rich history on the big screen, two female members of the Resistance shared a kiss in one celebration scene in the film.
The pair are minor characters, however, and are reportedly not heavily featured, which should not sit too well with the forced-diversity chorus.
“In the case of the LGBTQ community, it was important to me that people who go to see this movie feel that they’re being represented in the film,” Abrams said.
Many fans speculated that the same-sex sequence would be shared by Poe Dameron (Oscar Isaac) and Finn (John Boyega), but Abrams shot that idea down during an interview with Variety.
“That relationship to me is a far deeper one than a romantic one,’ Abrams said. ‘It is a deep bond that these two have, not just because of the trial by fire in which they met, but also because of their willingness to be as intimate as they are, as afraid as they, as unsure as they are, and still be bold, and still be daring and brave.”
Or perhaps with two men kissing, the potential yuck factor was just a little too high.
