A spending war over public opinion on abortion is heating up in Georgia, with a pro-life group announcing it will spend at least $3 million on advertising leading up to this year’s elections, reports the Atlanta Journal-Constitution.

The campaign by Georgia Life Alliance will launch this week with a radio ad backing Sen. David Perdue and Sen. Kelly Loeffler, and slamming the “impeachment witchhunt” that has virtually consumed the dealings of the U.S. Congress.

Georgia Life Alliance executive director Joshua Edmonds said out-of-state money is being spent in Georgia to counteract legislation limiting access to abortion that was approved last year. In 2019 Georgia’s General Assembly passed House Bill 341, which would outlaw abortions once fetal cardiac activity can be detected, sometimes before a woman knows she is pregnant.

A federal judge has temporarily stopped the law from being enforced while challenges make their way through the legal system.

Both sides of the issue quickly announced plans to either target or support lawmakers who backed the legislation.

“Georgia is a state that values life, and we are going to highlight that over the next 10 months,” Edmonds said.

National abortion rights group NARAL Pro-Choice America revealed last year that it was starting a digital advertising “educational campaign” targeting legislators who voted for HB 481. The group plans to spend $34.7 million across eight states, including Georgia.

Anti-abortion group Family Policy Alliance of Georgia also has pledged to support Republican candidates who will challenge Democratic incumbents who voted against HB 481.
