Rioters could be stripped of unemployment benefits and pay for police costs

People caught rioting during large protests could be stripped of their federal unemployment benefits and be forced to pay an order of restitution to police under a new bill proposed by a Republican Congressman. Pictured: Rioters setting fire to vehicles in Seattle on May 30

A bill introduced by Rep. Jim Banks (R-Ind.) would put rioters on the hook for the cost of federal policing and would bar them from collecting federal unemployment, reports Indiana’s WIBC.

Called the “Support Peaceful Protest Act”, The legislation penalizes people who are caught committing acts of violence, looting, or vandalism.

Banks said in an interview on Aug. 28 that he posted a picture on Twitter of a Ft. Wayne couple whom he described as leaders in the community, who were visiting the White House to hear President Trump give his speech at the Republican National Convention. The two were accosted by a threatening mob as they departed.

“The photo of them leaving…has gone viral on the internet,” he recalled. “As they left the angry mob got in their face. A violent mobster with both middle fingers in this woman’s face, trying to incite them.

“Antifa thugs are descending on suffering communities, disrupting peaceful protests and leaving violence, looting and vandalism in their wake. They turned Milwaukee, Seattle and Portland into war zones, and now they’re moving the chaos to Kenosha, Wisconsin. Who knows which community is next?”

Banks said anyone who is convicted of rioting would have to make payment for the hours of federal police who protect government sites in Washington and elsewhere in the country.

“ … Taxpayers are giving wages to jobless rioters that are destroying our communities. We need to cut them off from their funding and make them feel the full financial consequences of their actions … They have the time to show up every day at some of these violent protests like in Washington, D.C. and they’re getting $600 a week of unemployment to do it, and that’s got to stop.”
