Pakistan’s penal code mandates death for anyone who directs derogatory remarks at Islam’s Prophet Mohammed, or apparently at his mom as well, even though the pair are now well beyond suffering any Earthly insult.
It’s his followers on Earth you need to worry about.
A judge in Pakistan’s Rawalpindi district on Jan. 6 sentenced to death a Christian leader who has been in a Pakistani jail since 2012. He was condemned under section 295-C of the Pakistan Penal Code, reports opindia.com.
Bhatti’s alleged “crime” was sending blasphemous text messages insulting the Prophet Muhammad’s mother. However, the U.S. Commission for International Religious Freedom contends that Bhatti was tortured into confessing and that the phone with which the messages were sent never belonged to him.
In July of 2012 a local Islamic leader pressured police in Rawalpindi into lodging a complaint against an unregistered number over messages insulting the mother of Mohammed. The leader threatened that his group would take matters into its own hands if a blasphemy investigation were not opened under Section 295-C of the Penal Code.
Police later arrested and charged Bhatti, who insisted on his innocence but was subjected to torture until he confessed. Several reports proved that the phone’s SIM was not even registered to Bhatti.
Bhatti is part of a minority community in Pakistan which comprises around 1.27 percent of the country’s population.
In addition to being tortured by the police, Bhatti was also reportedly beaten by Muslim prisoners until he converted to Islam. According to reports his food was also poisoned, which left him in a critical condition for days.
