The Daily Mail – Alabama Public Television refused to air a PBS episode of “Arthur” that showed a same-sex marriage. The episode, “Mr. Ratburn and the Special Someone,” features the title character’s third-grade teacher Ratburn marrying Patrick, a chocolatier.
In the long-running PBS series, Nigel Ratburn is an elementary school teacher for the animated characters, but his sexual orientation was never mentioned. Mike McKenzie, director of programming at APT, told NBC News that the network decided to air a rerun instead after executives watched the episode.
“Parents have trusted Alabama Public Television for more than 50 years to provide children’s programs that entertain, educate and inspire,” McKenzie said, “that their children can watch without their supervision.”
