Daily Mail. The days of musicians being voted best male or female artist at Britain’s most high-profile music awards could be over – as bosses consider making the categories gender neutral.
The change could affect next year’s Brit Awards and come just a week after singer Sam Smith, who was nominated in the best male category at this year’s ceremony, pleaded ‘after a lifetime of being at war with my gender’ to be referred to as ‘they’ rather than ‘he’.
While Brit Awards categories such as best newcomer and best single include male and female nominees, those for best solo performers have been split by gender since 1977.
But it was reported yesterday that organisers are deciding whether to update categories to accommodate ‘non-binary’ artists such as Smith, 27, who sang the theme song to the 2015 Bond film Spectre.
The MTV Movie & TV Awards adopted a gender-neutral acting award in 2017, when it was given to Emma Watson for her role in Beauty And The Beast.
