The Secular Coalition For America (SCFA) is reporting that the Democratic National Committee has passed as a resolution claiming that “non-religious Americans” are a “rational” people who base their rejection of God on “sound science” and that they should be embraced by the Democrat Party.
According to SCFA, the resolution passed by unanimous vote on August 23 during the 2019 DNC Summer Meeting in San Francisco. The resolution lauds the “non-religious” for their liberal views on gay marriage, homosexual rights and immigration.
The reported DNC resolution also takes a swipe at people who believe in a God, saying they have often been guilty of “misplaced claims of ‘religious liberty,’ to justify public policy that has threatened the civil rights and liberties of many Americans.”
According to the alleged resolution, those who are most proud of their “morals, values, and patriotism” have also used their religious views to threaten “the LGBT community, women, and ethnic and religious/nonreligious minorities.”
The reported document claims Americans who hold religious views often mistreat their non-religious neighbors.
“The nonreligious have often been subjected to unfair bias and exclusion in American society…,” the resolution claims. This “unfair bias” occurs even though the non-religious “contribute in innumerable ways to the arts, sciences, medicine, business, law, the military, their communities…”
Some see the resolution as giving the “Religious Right” a powerful weapon during the upcoming national elections.
Patheos, an online publication that seeks to enhance global dialogue between religion affiliations, issued a stark warning this week about the resolution:
“It sets the party up for plenty of attacks by the Religious Right, who will inevitably paint this as some sort of attack on Christians — which is how they treat everything that doesn’t promote Christian Nationalism.”
Christian Action Network is working to verify the accuracy of the reported resolution.
