Gypsies everywhere can breathe a sigh of relief — their culture will no longer be referred to as part of the name of a condiment that German families love.
In a move intended to be sensitive and “woke,” but which shows staggering condescension, food company Knorr will change the name of its “Zigeuersauce,” or “gypsy sauce” to “Paprika Sauce Hungarian Style,” the German publication Bild am Sonntag reported on Aug. 16. The story was picked up by FOX News.
According to a growing number of huge international corporations, this is the kind of corporate largesse – even if purely symbolic – that humble ethnic minorities live for.
“Since ‘gypsy sauce’ can be interpreted in a negative way, we have decided to give our Knorr sauce a new name,” said Unilever, the industrial conglomerate that owns Knorr. The spicy preparation, used in many German households, will soon appear with the new name in stores across the country, reported Bild.
The renaming of the brand follows recent hysteria over even traces of racism, especially in the United States, where big national companies have been tossing out brands like Aunt Jemima syrup and Uncle Ben’s rice in the fear that social activists will call them racist.
