Anxious to portray Americans who besieged the U.S. Capitol on Jan. 6 as a bloodthirsty and destructive mob, a prominent Democratic lawmaker urged authorities to ban them from passenger flights.
“We already saw reports of ‘unruly mobs’ in air on the way to Washington, D.C.,” said a statement by the Democratic chairman of the House Homeland Security Committee, Bennie Thompson, reported by Reuters. “It does not take much imagination to envision how they might act out on their way out of D.C. if allowed to fly unfettered.”
So, fetter them, he argued, urging the Transportation Security Administration (TSA) and the Federal Bureau of Investigation to put anyone identified as having entered the Capitol building on a no-fly list.
The leader of the Association of Flight Attendants-CWA (AFA) has also called for the Trump supporters to be barred from commercial flights out of the D.C. region.
Unions tend to be huge financial supporters of Democratic politicians, routing membership dues to Democratic candidates.
“Acts against our democracy, our government and the freedom we claim as Americans must disqualify these individuals from the freedom of flight,” Sara Nelson said in a statement late on Jan. 6.
Several airlines assured the public they are working with law enforcement to keep people safe and would keep up strict mask policies on flights.
The TSA, which has authority over U.S. travel security, said the same day that it had many layers of security in place but did not give details.
