Vague, conflicting guidelines about “social distancing,” wherein a virus from China is used to re-order American society and economic activity, are leading at last to violence.

A man was arrested on July 27 for producing a firearm in the presence of a mother and son in a Miami Beach hotel lobby, and firing shots. He was allegedly upset over the pair’s lack of social distancing.

Veronica Pena and her son, visiting Miami Beach from New Mexico, said they were in the lobby of the Crystal Beach Suites when they first saw the man, identified as Douglas Marks, 47.

Marks, of Miami, confronted the woman and her son, according to reports. According to an affidavit seen by Local10.com, Marks proceeded to tell the pair: “You aren’t social distancing.”

He reportedly informed them that they needed to leave the hotel, then produced a black firearm which he fired “several” times right in the lobby. No one was injured in the shooting.

One witness recorded the scene after the incident, with Marks being arrested by Miami Beach police. Another who spoke to Local10 but preferred to remain anonymous said that he tried to protect the mother and son.

Marks has allegedly confessed but told police that he fired four “warning shots” because he was being followed, and asked the front desk to call 911. He faces several charges in the incident, including aggravated assault with a deadly weapon and discharging a firearm in public.

As of July 28, Marks was in custody at the Turner Guilford Knight Correctional Center, Local10 reported.
