A schoolteacher in Tacoma, Wash. took it upon him- or herself to sexualize middle school students, handing out a flyer to 8th-graders about abortion, birth control, sexual consent and other topics.
The school is apologizing, apparently realizing what a faux pas it is to engage other people’s youngsters in permissive conversation about premarital sex.
Stewart Middle School students got the flyer in science class, and it included instructions about getting abortions and contraceptives.
Created by Planned Parenthood, the flyer makes a point of telling readers that they can do these things WITHOUT parental consent. It was shared on social media by a concerned parent, and a district spokesperson confirmed to news station KTTH that it is authentic.
The flyer talks up Plan B emergency contraception, telling middle schools they can purchase it without a prescription, regardless of age, effectively getting them into the free-sex arena sooner. Similarly, the flyer reminds children that anyone 14 or older does not need permission from a parent for STD and HIV testing or treatment.
The Tacoma Public Schools district has called distribution of the flyer a mistake. Eric Hogan, assistant director of secondary education in the district, said in an email to a parent: “The flyer is not part of our curriculum and should not have been sent home with students.
“We discovered a binder of curriculum materials was left behind for an incoming teacher to use for this year, and this flyer was in the binder. Not realizing the flyer wasn’t approved material, the teacher sent it home with students.”
The teacher has been disciplined for the “mistake,” Hogan claimed.
