Even while they continue to characterize Jan. 6 at the Capitol as a wall-to-wall riot and bloodbath, which CAN accounts suggest is far from the truth, leftists maintain that Black Lives Matter protests over the summer were “mostly peaceful” and that police overreacted.
In fact, New York Attorney General Letitia James is suing the New York City Police Department over their “excessive, brutal and unlawful” handling of last year’s violent protests, reports Dailymail.com.
James is even requesting a federal monitor to oversee their policing tactics, which amounts to federal control over state policing.
Filed Jan. 14, the suit in the Southern District of New York names Police Commissioner Dermot Shea, Chief of Department and Mayor Bill de Blasio as defendants.
Protests in New York City about “racial injustice” flared up from May through December, and first erupted after the death of George Floyd in Minnesota in police custody on Memorial Day.
“We found a pattern of deeply concerning and unlawful practices that the NYPD utilized in response to these largely peaceful protests,” James said in a news conference on Jan. 14, adding the “pattern of abuse” stemmed from inadequate training, supervision and discipline.
The lawsuit alleges that from May 28, 2020, to December 11, 2020, officers of various ranks “repeatedly and without justification used batons, fist strikes, pepper spray, and other physical force” against protesters.
