The targeting by vandals of churches –Catholic churches in particular – continued this week with the destruction of a religious icon at Mother Cabrini Church in Shamokin, Pa., according to WNEP 16 News.
A statue of St. Theresa was beaten with a weapon by vandals at the church, which is now
pleading for someone to return the broken-off head of Jesus. The sculpted head had been on a crucifix being held by St. Theresa.
The church’s Facebook page showed pictures of the damage, which the parish says was inflicted sometime on Nov. 8 or 9.
Moher Cabrini pastor Father Martin Kobos said the statue had stood in front of the church for 25 years before being ruined.
“The people had to go up the church steps and perhaps use a long object, like a bat or a pipe,” said Kobos.
The Facebook post says the vandals also stole the head and upper body of Jesus after the damage was done.
The church has reached out to a local artist who does sculpture repair work to see about getting the statue fixed.
