Minneapolis, the focus of intense media attention since a black man died there in police custody, has hung out a sign to criminals that there soon will be no police in the city to hamper criminal activity.
That’s right: Minneapolis is making itself a law-free zone, since keeping order is racist.
President Trump was quick to warn that Democrats are eager take the same action across the country, reports the New York Post.
“‘Minneapolis City Council unanimously approves proposal to disband police.’ @TIME,” the president tweeted on July 1. “The Democrats would do this all over the U.S. It would be a disaster for safety & security!”
The Time article reported that draft language of the amendment would replace the police department with a Department of Community Safety and Violence Prevention and prioritize a “public health-oriented approach.” The move comes amid media-inflamed “protests” over the death of a black man in the hands of Minneapolis police officers on May 25.
Bearing out Trump’s warning, the New York City Council early Wednesday in a 32-17 vote passed the city’s $88.1 billion budget that included slashing the NYPD’s budget by $1 billion.
Local Progress, a group that advocates for racial and economic justice and has tracked the issue, said at least 19 cities, including Philadelphia, Baltimore, Portland and Seattle, have voted to shift funds from their police departments to other social and community resources.
Other cities looking to hobble their police departments include Washington, D.C., Chicago, Milwaukee, Denver, San Francisco, San Diego, Los Angeles, Oakland, Durham and Winston-Salem.
