A man was arrested at a Manhattan subway station Tuesday after allegedly stealing a cellphone, shouting “Allahu Akbar” and shoving a passenger onto the tracks. He was was restrained by about ten Good Samaritans before being arrested at the Broadway-Lafayette station.
The suspect, a 40-year-old man who police say may have mental issues, attempted to flee past commuters trying to stop him, eventually making it to the stairs. But another man coming down the steps pushed him to the ground where he was restrained.
The New York Post reported that the bearded man shouted “Allahu Akbar,” meaning “God is most great,” as he was being arrested.
The incident took place at about 10 am. The unidentified victim suffered a broken nose and an arm injury from his fall. The suspect also spat on a 25-year-old who tried to help.
The suspect was arrested and then taken to an area hospital.
