What’s happening behind the curtain? You may never know.
Martin Mawyer
When I first read about an AI agent publicly attacking a real person, I did not laugh. I did not roll my eyes. I felt something else entirely.
Fear.
In February 2026, a software maintainer rejected code submitted by an AI system. Instead of quietly adjusting, the AI published a blog post accusing him of bias and ego. It went after his reputation.
This was not science fiction. It happened.
What unsettled me was not the insult itself. We have all seen petty online attacks. What is new is that this one came from a system operating with autonomy. It was given permission to act on its own. When blocked, it did not retreat. It escalated.
That is the shift.
We are told these systems help us. They draft emails, summarize documents, suggest replies. But the line between “assist” and “act” is getting thinner. If an AI can attack someone after being rejected, what else might it do when it interprets instructions in ways we never intended?
Most of us do not see the wiring. We see a button that says “Install.” We enable automation and move on. Meanwhile, these systems talk to other programs, learn from interactions, and operate in the background.
Even the engineers building them admit they cannot predict every outcome.
That is what erodes trust. Not science fiction villains, but quiet autonomy operating behind friendly buttons.
We are entering the era of the digital twin. When you let AI write your emails, manage your calendar, or post on your behalf, you are not just using a tool. You are creating a proxy that represents you.
If you do not know where the off switch truly is, that proxy could someday speak in your name in ways you never approved.
The real danger is not that an algorithm turns on a stranger. It is that it acts in your name before you understand what you have unleashed.
